Founder Leadership Challenge #2

Delegation Isn't The Problem
“I need to get better at delegating.”
I hear some version of this from leaders (not just founders) all the time.
Your company is growing.
Your responsibilities are multiplying.
Your team needs more from you.
And there simply aren’t enough hours in the day.

So, the obvious solution is to delegate more.
But what if delegation isn’t really the problem?
What if the real problem is clarity?
Delegation becomes difficult when:
→ You haven’t clearly defined what only you should be doing
→ Your team doesn’t know where they have authority to make decisions
→ Expectations live in your head instead of being clearly communicated
→ You hand off tasks but remain involved in every decision
→ You’re uncomfortable watching someone do something differently than you would
That isn’t just a delegation problem.
It’s a leadership challenge.
I’ve dealt with all of these challenges to some extent while serving as a military officer to launching two businesses as a solopreneur.
It aint easy but once you figure this out, it’s a gamechanger!
As your company grows, your value increasingly comes from your ability to create clarity, develop people, establish systems, and enable others to accomplish more without you being involved in everything.
That’s hard!
After all, the company exists because you were willing to take ownership when no one else could.
But the same instinct that helped you build the company can eventually limit its growth.
The goal isn't simply to delegate more tasks.
The goal is to build a company where people understand:
1) What they own.
2) What success looks like.
3) What decisions they can make.
4) And when they actually need you.
That's when delegation becomes leadership.
And that's when you begin making the transition from doer to leader.
